"We so funny"

August 19 (Happy birthday Gigi and Kerry)

Last night after waiting 5 hours for Maren at the Copenhagen airport, she arrived through the doors and I was holding a Danish flag, welcoming her!

We hopped on the train to Copenhagen main station to get to our hostel. I was so organized with exactly how to get to our hostel but it failed miserably!

I booked this hostel so I felt it was my responsibility to give Maren a good look at hostel living.

Well we grabbed a French hot dog at the train station because we both were starving and headed on our way.

The directions seemed pretty straight forward. Well we had been walking for quite a while so I decided to ask someone. This either helps me tremendously or messes you up completely. We ended asking about four different people who were all giving us completely different answers. Well we ended up I'm the red light district of Copenhagen, sex shops, message shops, with prostitutes and drug addicts hanging out around the streets. It was a pretty sketchy situation and I felt horrible I brought Maren here but I was trying to remain calm and collected for both of our sakes. And when you are in a situation like that you must look confident.

This girl about my age was walking down the same road, she looked at google maps and we ended up having to turn around and go back where we came from. Ah!

We finally made it to our hostel safe and sound. Well lets just say the hostel isn't the best one I have stayed in (one of the worst actually). We tiptoed around this 32 bed dorm to find our bed and just crashed, figuring we would deal with everything when we woke up.

Well after a rough start to Maren's travels, we ended up having an amazing next day!

After we showered and got out of the hostel as soon as we could and we went to a bagel place for breakfast and coffee.

I haven't had a bagel in so long and it tasted great!
We looked at a map and planned our day!

We started our day by going back to our hostel because we had on shorts and tank tops and we were freezing!

We started off walking towards the town hall and ended up walking down strøget, a big shopping street! Again, we had a few things we wanted to see today but it is so nice to just walk around cities and find your way around with no set plans. We did a little shopping, just a little :)

We walked by christiansborg palace, the old stock exchange, and made our way towards christianshaven.

Christianshavan is a neighborhood in Copenhagen with a very quant atmosphere. There are many unique store and Cafes on the canals. There are old houses and house boats on the canals with cobble stone roads (which I kept rolling my ankles on).

We just walked around the canals, taking pictures and just aimlessly walking. It's so fun being with Maren because she is similar to me and loves to take lots is pictures and make them look pretty so I never feel like I'm holding her up.

I was excited to see Christiania so we headed away from the canals to go check it out. Christiania also known as Freetown Christiania is a self proclaimed autonomous neighborhood with about 850 residents and 84 acres. It's a free state so the residents make the rules.

"The objective of Christiania is to create a self-governing society whereby each and every individual holds themselves responsible over the wellbeing of the entire community. Our society is to be economically self-sustaining and, as such, our aspiration is to be steadfast in our conviction that psychological and physical destitution can be averted"

About 5:00 we left the christian town are and made our way to tovoli. Tivoli is very well known here and is similar to an amusement park with rides and, games, and cotton candy. I probably wouldn't have gone if I was alone but Maren was so excited to go! And I am so thankful for that because it was awesome. It was so much better than I expected it to be. It was magical with beautiful buildings and fountains and lights. Since it was dusk when we went we were able to see all the rides and building lit up!

I felt bad that I don't like roller coasters and rides because I know Maren really wanted to go on one but I asked her if we could jut spend our money on food instead!

We started off with happy hour.

Next, candy floss!!!!!! Maren had been dreaming of this all day. She was in heaven.

We had such a great time just acting childish and taking way too many photos.
We were so goofy and thought we were so funny! We just got in these laughing tangets together! Oh, so muh fun!$

Now it's ice cream time!! She has never had Ben and Jerry's before so she had to try it. There was a conference going on in Copenhagen for a firm in America (i don't know what company) so there were more Americans in this small space than I have seen combined in the past 2 months. It was crazy. Maren and I were ordering our ice cream and a few Americans walked by and laughed at the Ben and Jerry's and took a picture. One of the guys tried to get in the picture and I went to move out of the way.  He grabbed me and said I can be in the picture with him. I looked down at his name tag and he was from Madison, Wisconsin!

They were laughing at me eating at Ben and Jerry's but I clarified that I was with a Norwegian. Haha

It was an a so mutely beautiful area tucked away in the heart of the city! I am so so glad that we went!!

We went to this restaurant to split a burger and people watch. It was getting dark so all of the lights started coming on! I watched Americans walk by and loved to listen to what they were talking about. You don't realize how hard people watching is when you can't understand their language!

And yes, Maren had to get one more cotton candy before tivoli closed!

Since we feel like we have seen a good chunk of the city today we talked about canceling out hostel and catching a late train to Aarhus tomorrow night. We really had no control over this situation though because we may not even be able to cancel the hostel in this late of notice. We figured that we would just wait to see what they said when we got back to the hostel and go from there.

We decided to just go walk around the street with a lot of action to just see what was going on tonight and then we were going to head back to the hostel. We were both tired so we wanted to get to bed early!

We ended up walking past an Irish bar with live music and I was suckered in. I cannot say no to live music especially when you walk in and he is playing the doobie brothers. You can just assume he is awesome.

Well 3 hours later we were on our way back to the hostel! We were intending to go in for one beer and we just couldn't leave because he was so amazing!

He played all of my favorite songs and was very engaging with the crowd. He would ask where everyone is from and there were like 7 different countries in this small bar, and we were all singing along to the same songs! It is such a neat feeling to see all of these diverse cultures coming together through music.

The guitarists name was Rich Vargas and he loved Maren and I! He would talk with us during our breaks and always snuck in Wisconsin terms to his songs. He just called me Wisconsin.

It doesn't look like it but the place was actually packed and we met a lot of people. Mostly because random people were pulling us up to dance with them and I am far from a dancer. I figured I would never see hear people ever again so I really didn't care!

Rich asked for requests and I shouted "take me home, tonight" (a great somg by eddie money) and he said "oh my, do you even know my name and you want to take me home tonight? Take it easy there wisconsin". I was embarrassed and blushing so much! Then he said he didn't know it and asked me to sing it. I sand just a bit of the choir in front of the whole bar! Oh man, the things you do when you aren't worried about what others will think of you! It was so much fun!

We stopped at Burger King and then ran home to our hostel!

We spent a lot of money today so we promised tomorrow we would only buy food at the super markets!

What a great day :)
